Wilmington is an urban neighborhood in the Los Angeles Harbor Region of southern California. The Wilmington oil field was discovered there in 1932, and today the area is home to three oil refineries. According to a 2016 report from the American Lung Association, the presence of the oil industry combined with highway traffic leading to and from the Port of LA give this area the worst ozone and particle pollution in the country.

History

In early 2012, Wilmington saw a series of homicides that took the lives of ten people under the age of 30. Since that tragic time, residents and organizers have made a conscious choice to embrace civic pride in a public way. The I Heart Wilmington initiative has engaged thousands of residents, elected leaders, business owners and organizational partners in advocacy around issues such as public safety, voter registration, equitable neighborhood school discipline policies, the prevention of child abuse and neglect, and reducing illegal dumping and blight. While the city continues to receive mostly negative attention from the media, it has become a model of resilience and civic engagement.

Culture

Today, Wilmington is a proud immigrant community. Nearly half of residents are foreign-born, with high concentrations from Mexico and Guatemala. Cohesion and connectedness shine through in local volunteerism, including community gardens, art walks, neighborhood events and the senior center. Even though Wilmington is a low-income area, with many residents’ immigration status preventing them from legitimate employment, the community has positive relationships with law enforcement, politicians, labor unions and local industry.
